A Kentucky man used his mask to cut off his son’s umbilical cord after his wife gave birth at a hospital parking lot.
CNN reports Sarah Rose Patrick began to have labor pains on May 8 but her doctors told her she was not ready for labor. The following morning, Patrick started to have contractions and her husband David rushed her to Baptist Health Hospital in Louisville but the maternity ward’s sliding doors were allegedly locked.

Patrick said their third child couldn’t wait and she had to give birth at the hospital’s parking lot with the help of a 911 dispatcher. David used the strings on his face mask to tie the baby’s umbilical cord and named him Navi Bond Patrick.
“You’re delivering your baby in the cold night air, on the street, in Covid-19”

Navi and Sarah were brought inside by hospital staff shortly after his birth. a statement from officials told CNN that they always made sure their Labor and Delivery Department doors are fully accessible:
“Patients who come to Baptist Health Louisville, who are pregnant and in labor, can always enter the hospital in the middle of the night through the Emergency Room or enter through the entrance to the Labor and Delivery department which is located in the front of the building at 3900 Kresge Way. Both entrances have signage and both entrances are open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Other entrances to the hospital are closed after 7 p.m. until 5 a.m.”
