Malnourished College Student Dies Weighing 48 Pounds

A Chinese female college student who endured poverty while trying to support her sick brother has died of malnourishment.

According to CNN, 24-year-old Wu Huayan lived on rice and chili for five years while working two jobs and studying for school. Local news reports stated she only weighed 48 pounds when she died Monday at the Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou Medical University. She received treatment at the hospital since October after dealing with respiratory issues.

Huayan cared for her brother after their parents’ and grandmother’s death and earned money through a social security program earning 300 yuan($43.50). She lived a frugal lifestyle so she could save money for her brother’s needs.

She was a third-year student at the Guizhou Forerunner College and received donations from a local charity after her story shocked the country. The Beijing-based charity raised over 600,443 yuan($87,000).
