Would You Cop? Maison Margiela Debuts New Luxury Face Mask Retailing At $510

The French fashion house, founded by Belgian designer Martin Margiela, recently debuted a few new sheer face masks that send a nod to the Renaissance period — and also the intersection of sex and fashion (whether that was intentional or not.

However, it is reported that the mask was really “supposed to be a nod to the world of fencing.”

John Galliano, the trailblazing Creative Director at Maison Margiela is behind the unorthodox yet elegant and contemporary face mask, that was recently released on March 30 as part of a new collection of Fabric Face Masks at the French fashion house.

Again, the mask was created with the intention to reflect inspiration found within the world of fencing.

However, this particular mask, which doubles as a sheer veil of translucence, is truly playful, and to some may resemble a gimp mask, which is a kinky product that is marketed to those who love BDSM (which stands for Bondage, Discipline / Domination, Sadism / Submission, Mascochism / Sadomasochism) — but, Galliano’s mask is more sensual and sultry rather than bold and hyper-sexual.

Now, despite trying to figure out the intentions of inspiration and trying to decipher what the mask gives, Galliano’s latest creation is featured in the sizes of small, medium and large; and in the color ways of “Light Sky” (which retails at $510), “Palladium” (retailing at $220) and “Black’ (retailing at $250).

The description for “Light Sky” on the Mason Margiela site entices prospective patrons with brief detail that reads, “Playing with identity, this fabric mask lightly covers the face.”

For “Palladium,” it reads, “The face mask in extra-light poly has a sheer finish and is tied at the back for a ruched design.” And for “Black,” it reads, “Playing with identity, this fabric mask lightly covers the face in stretchy georgette.”

The key difference with Palladium versus the other color ways is that it is made from polyester rather than the more luxurious materials that make up the other two colors: Light Sky and Black.

All three make also feature a unique tie mechanism at the back of the head that allows for ruching and pleats to artfully skew the wearer’s facial features.

The masks are definitely statement pieces, reminding us just how powerful artistic expression can be within the world of fashion.
