The frantic search began when Galeana, known for her love of boxes, jumped into a package in her family’s home that was set to be returned. However, her owners were unaware that the package contained multiple steel-toe work boots and was shipped to California. An Amazon employee discovered the cat inside the large box almost a week later. Despite being trapped without food or water for several days, Galeana was in good health after the Amazon worker took her to the vet. Carrie Clark was contacted after Galeana’s microchip was scanned.

“It was the most amazing, insane news in the entire world,” Ms. Clark exclaimed to NBC affiliate KSL TV 5. Initially thinking it was a hoax, she soon realized the gravity of the situation. Clark and her husband traveled over 1,000 miles to California and said her cat immediately relaxed once she was in her owner’s arms. Learning from the incident, Clark urged pet owners to microchip their pets and be extra cautious with package shipments.

Fortunately, Galeana’s ordeal was mitigated by a partially open seam in the box that allowed air circulation, and mild weather conditions prevented any risk of freezing or overheating during the journey. Social media users also responded to the situation and had their opinions on what they would do in this situation.

Cats are drawn to boxes for several reasons. One key factor is their instinct to seek shelter. Cats rely on hidden spaces in the wild to stay safe from predators. A cardboard box provides a cozy den with walls on all sides for protection and a limited opening for observation. Boxes can also help cats feel warm and conserve body heat, thanks to the insulating cardboard and the curled-up position they typically take inside. Ultimately, a box offers security and comfort, making it an irresistible hangout for felines.
