Lizzo Speaks On Being A “Body Icon” — “I Like Being Fat, And I’m Beautiful And I’m Healthy”
Got to love Lizzo! In a new cover story for People Magazine’s Women Changing the World Issue, the superstar talks about her path to success, finding her “power” and shutting down body shammers.
While looking back on her rise to fame with her hit song “Truth Hurts,” earning three Grammys, two Soul Train Awards, and millions of fans, she also recalled her body being a topic of conversation. She told the outlet: “Okay, we all know I’m fat. I know I’m fat. It doesn’t bother me. I like being fat, and I’m beautiful and I’m healthy. So can we move on?”
Moving on from stereotypes like “the funny, fat friend” or “the friend who is gonna beat your a** ’cause she’s big” — is exactly what she wants people to do: “I don’t think I’m the only kind of fat girl there is. I want us to be freed from that box we’ve been put in.” The entertainer went on to say, “I think I have a really hot body! I’m a body icon, and I’m embracing that more and more every day,” she told the magazine. “It may not be one person’s ideal body type just like, say, Kim Kardashian might not be someone’s ideal, but she’s a body icon and has created a modern-day beauty standard. And what I’m doing is stepping into my confidence and my power to create my own beauty standard.” She added, “and one day that will just be the standard.”
Aside from that Lizzo, born Melissa Viviane Jefferson, gives herself all the credit for coming this far: “I deserve the spotlight,” says Lizzo, now 33. “I deserve the attention. I’m talented, I’m young, I’m hot. You know? And I’ve worked hard.”
