Destiny’s Child’s former manager Mathew Knowles is seemingly reacting with a video of DC5 after Letoya Luckett’s former manager claimed someone tried to ban her solo debut song, “Torn,” from radio 20 years ago.

On Saturday (July 25), Luckett celebrated the 20th anniversary of her self-titled debut album. After dropping on July 25, 2006, the album hit #1 on the Billboard 200 as of August 12, 2006.
While celebrating 20 years of ‘Letoya,’ the 45-year-old singer went live with fans on her Instagram. During the live, she ended up bringing on Dave Young, whom she described as her “silent partner who had the biggest voice” on her debut album. She said, “He was my coach, friend, and confidant who helped me find my sound and my voice for my debut album. He’s the voice on ‘Torn.’”
Shortly after, Luckett welcomed on Terry Ross, who helped develop her sound and brought her to Capitol Records. He ended up becoming her road manager.

As the three reminisced and celebrated 20 years since Luckett’s solo debut, Ross recalled how difficult it was to break her. Despite Luckett having success with Destiny’s Child, Ross alleged they “fought through a lot of f**king hate.”
He repeatedly said, “It was a lot.” Luckett agreed and quickly disclaimed, “I can’t really speak on it.” Ross recalled, “When your record went to radio, there was a call put in that [said,] ‘If you play that record, you won’t get no more records from this group.’”
Luckett said, “I was not privy to that information. But you know? To God be the glory.” Ross continued, “That record fought through that. There was hate. There was a mandate called up to the radio stations: ‘Do not play that record.’”

While Luckett visibly appeared uncomfortable with the conversation and wanting to dead the topic, Ross continued to share another instance of “hate” and obstacles faced trying to break her solo debut. Ross recalled an alleged incident with songwriter Sean Garrett. Ross said, “And you knew this one too, Toya.”
With an uncomfortable smile on her face, she blurted, “I don’t know if I want to know anything else. No, don’t tell me. It’s [been] 20 years. Everybody’s healed.” Ross persisted, “Remember when songwriters were getting paid? We sent a certain writer $20,000 to do a record. Remember?” Luckett’s eyes got wide as if to signal to Ross to stop talking and move on.
He still continued, “You don’t remember? I’ll say the n***a name. Sean Garrett.” Luckett shouted, “Ok! We’re saying names.” She directed a message to Young, “Dave! How do we get him off?!” They all start laughing and Young said, “It’s supposed to be a celebration.” Ross continued to said, “No. I’m just saying how dope you had to be and how dope these records had to be to break through.”
He continued to share this alleged story about Garrett claiming he “couldn’t do the record” despite being paid $20K. As Ross continued to share the story, Luckett chimed in and praised Garrett for being an incredible writer and friend. She continued to recall having her own meeting with Garrett and him telling her the reason why he declined to work with. She said they talked through things and 20 years later everyone is good.

Days after Letoya Luckett’s IG Live, her former manager, Mathew Knowles, seemingly reacted. While taking to his Instagram feed on Tuesday (July 28), he shared a video of all members of Destiny’s Child, including the founding members (Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson, Letoya Luckett) plus latecomer Michelle Williams. All five women united for the first time at Bey’s Renaissance Tour in Houston, Texas on September 23, 2023.
