J.R. Smith, the two-time NBA champion was arrested Tuesday on a family violence charge. According to Hunt County jail records, he was booked on assault causing bodily injury, family violence.

As of now, Smith is still sitting in the Hunt County Detention Center, TMZ reports. Jail records also show that no bond has been set, so it’s unclear when he could walk out.Â
However, his mug shot has been released and he looks serious, staring straight into the camera in a dark jail smock. Police and jail officials haven’t shared many details about what happened. At this time we don’t know who was involved or what led to the arrest, and we haven’t heard from Smith or his lawyer yet.
For those who need a refresher, Smith played 16 seasons in the NBA. He won his first ring with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016, then added a second with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020. After retiring, he went back to school and enrolled at North Carolina A&T State University, an HBCU. He even joined the golf team. In May 2026, he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies. Plenty of folks cheered him on for that move, calling it proof that it’s never too late to level up.
That’s what makes today’s news a little shocking. Just a few months after walking across the stage in a cap and gown, Smith is now in a jail cell facing a serious charge.
This isn’t his first time dealing with the law, either. Back in 2007, Smith was in a car crash that killed one of his passengers, and he later pleaded guilty to reckless driving and spent time in jail. He has talked openly about how tough that period was and how few people showed up for him while he was locked up.
