Israel Approves Ceasefire Two Weeks After Launching Airstrikes On Gaza Strip

A ceasefire on the Gaza Strip has been officially approved by the Israel Security Cabinet two weeks after airstrikes in residential and commercials.

The announcement was made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Office after security officials and government ministers held a meeting that was organized by Egyptian officials. The meeting included Israel and Hamas who agreed on the ceasefire and the militant group said they will respect the truce as reported by The Hill.  Additionally, the ceasefire will begin around 2 a.m. local time.

“The Security Cabinet, this evening, unanimously accepted the recommendation of all of the security officials, the IDF Chief-of-Staff, the head of the ISA, the head of the Mossad, and the head of the National Security Council to accept the Egyptian initiative for a mutual ceasefire without pre-conditions, to take effect at a time to be determined. The IDF Chief-of-Staff, the military and the head of the ISA briefed ministers on Israel’s significant achievements in the operation, some of which are unprecedented. The political leadership emphasizes that it is the reality on the ground that will determine the future of the operation.

Within the past two weeks, 232 people have been killed during the airstrikes on the Gaza Strip which included 65 children while a dozen people were killed in Israel. Military officials said 135 of those killed in Gaza were combatants, the outlet noted.
