Hakan Aysal,40, was arrested for the crime back in 2018 after he was accused of killing his 32-year-old wife Semra Aysal and their unborn baby during a vacation in Butterfly Valley, Mugla Turkey. Serma was seven months pregnant at the time of her death and prosecutors said Hakan tried to take out a life insurance policy for approximately 400,000 Turkish Iira ($57,000). He was initially denied due to a police investigation and they added that the murder was premeditated.

Hakan has denied the allegations and says his wife died after she placed her cell phone in her bag. “After taking a photo, my wife put the phone in her bag. Later she asked me to give her the phone. I got up and then heard my wife scream behind me when I walked a few steps away to get the phone from her bag. When I turned back, she was not there. I did not push my wife,” he explained during court.

According to The Sun, Semra’s brother Naim Yolcu said Hakan showed no emotion when his sister died.

“When we went to the Forensic Medicine Institute to get the body, Hakan was sitting in the car. My family and I were destroyed, but Hakan did not even appear sad.”

Yolcu added that Hakan had a fear of heights and wondered why they would go on a hike near cliffs. The family also learned that Aysal took out several loans in Semra’s name after her death.

“My sister was always against taking out loans. However, after she died, we learned that she had three loans taken by Hakan on behalf of my sister.”
