Last Thursday, Leader John Lee announced that the giveaway would begin in March and last for six months. Participants must purchase two-for-one tickets or enter a lottery system to be eligible. The city’s Airport Authority spent $2 billion on HK Express, Cathay Pacific Airways, and Hong Kong Airlines tickets in 2020. According to CNBC, the city will also give away 80,000 flights to city residents during the summer and 80,000 other residents in southern China’s Greater Bay Area.

“”Hello Hong Kong” as the over-arching theme to attract visitors to the city: distributing 500,000 free air tickets and welcoming people from around the world to come and experience the hospitality of Hong Kong in person. Over the past few years, a number of major new attractions have opened, including the Hong Kong Palace Museum and M+ museum at the West Kowloon Cultural District, providing visitors with more exciting experiences. There are also various special offers, cash vouchers, and other incentives to enrich their itinerary in Hong Kong.”

It is a plan by city officials to boost its economy after a three-year isolation during the pandemic, political controversy surrounding security laws in 2020, and protests in 2019. The city continues to enforce a mandatory mask policy and can be fined up to $1,275.

The government is also inviting business leaders, political figures, media representatives, and influencers to experience the city of Hong Kong and understand its upcoming developments. Additionally, there will be events focusing on the economy, technology, arts, and sports.

“The “Hello Hong Kong” campaign would tell people around the world that Hong Kong is “back” again. The Government and the Hong Kong Inc. partner organisations will go all out to showcase and promote the city’s new bright economic prospects, new cultural vision as well as new tourism and mega event experiences. The newly-established Task Force on Promoting and Branding Hong Kong will seize this timely opportunity to devise narratives to proactively demonstrate Hong Kong’s new strengths,” said Financial Secretary Paul Chan.

Some travelers were interested in the idea as the tickets will be distributed during the spring and summer months.
