A home nurse has died after saved her paraplegic patient from a house fire in Delhi, Louisiana. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

According to the Daily Mail, the 71-year-old explained to investigators how her home nurse, 64-year-old Gwendolyn Theus, saved her life from the fire. The Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office said in a news release that Theus alerted the disabled patient about the fire on Monday and was overpowered by the smoke as she attempted to push them out of a window.
In the aftermath, firefighters performed CPR on Theus and the patient but Theus couldn’t be saved after pulling both women from the fiery home. The patient was airlifted from her home to a burn unit in Mississippi and she is expected to recover from her injuries. State Fire Marshal H. ‘Butch’ Browning hailed Theus as a hero and called her actions “both admirable and heartbreaking.”
‘Our prayers are with her loved ones and with the surviving victim for her recovery and loss of her dedicated nurse and friend.’

Investigators reported due to the extreme damage done to the home, a cause for the fire has yet to be investigated. They also noted that there were working smoke alarms in the home.
