Consumers in Canada are being urged to check their spice cabinets after a brand of garlic powder sold at Dollarama stores was recalled over concerns about possible bacterial contamination.
According to People, Heavenly Spices brand garlic powder has been recalled due to the potential presence of Bacillus cereus, a bacterium that can cause food poisoning. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency announced the recall on July 15 and advised retailers to immediately stop selling the affected product. Officials also urged consumers not to use, sell, serve, or distribute the recalled garlic powder if they have purchased it.
What Is Bacillus cereus?
Bacillus cereus is a bacterium that can cause foodborne illness, with symptoms that commonly include:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Stomach cramps
- Nausea
According to health officials, symptoms typically develop within hours of consuming contaminated food and usually resolve within about two days. The bacterium is commonly found in a variety of foods, including rice, pasta, potatoes, sauces, fish, and spices.
Product Was Sold at Dollarama Stores
The recalled Heavenly Spices garlic powder was sold at Dollarama locations across Canada.
At the time of the recall, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency had not announced any confirmed illnesses linked to the product.
