A 12-year-old baby girl is gone, and her family says it all started with something that never should’ve happened in the first place, a metal water bottle thrown in anger.
According to her loved ones, Khimberly, a bright and joyful student, was attacked in a school hallway by another 12-year-old girl. Her mother, Elma Chuquipa, shared that the other student threw a metal water bottle, striking Khimberly right in the head.
At first, it didn’t seem like it would end like this. According to KTLA, Khimberly was rushed to the emergency room and later sent home. But days later, everything changed. She collapsed and was taken back to the hospital. Doctors determined she had suffered a brain hemorrhage. Not long after, her family was forced to say goodbye.
Now the Los Angeles Police Department is investigating her death as a homicide. Authorities have not released further details as the investigation continues.
Her family has since started a GoFundMe to help cover medical and funeral expenses. By Friday night, more than $13,000 had been raised, a sign that the community is wrapping its arms around them during the darkest time imaginable.
On that page, her family shared words that now feel even heavier:
“As the baby of our family, she brought a special light and joy into our lives. She loved her family, music, volleyball, walks with her two beloved dogs, and had many dreams for the future. Tragically, Khimberly’s life was cut short following a bullying incident at school.”
In a statement, the Los Angeles Unified School District addressed the tragedy:
“The Los Angeles Unified School District is deeply saddened by the death of a Reseda High School student. Our thoughts and condolences are with the student’s family, friends, and the entire school community. Out of respect for the family and to protect confidentiality, we cannot share details. The District remains committed to providing support to students, staff, and families affected by this loss, including counseling services and additional resources on campus. The District takes the safety and well-being of our students very seriously. We are currently cooperating with law enforcement in connection with this incident,” KTLA quotes.
