This news isn’t easy to share. The cause of death for actress Hayden Panettiere has officially been confirmed, and the details are as heartbreaking.

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office in South Carolina announced Tuesday that the 36-year-old “Heroes” and “Nashville” star died from the toxic effects of a dangerous drug combination that included fentanyl, and her death has officially been ruled accidental. According to the coroner’s office, Panettiere had fentanyl, its chemical byproduct 4-ANPP, the anti-anxiety medication alprazolam (Xanax), a muscle relaxer, and a drug used to treat major depression all in her system at the time of her death. The autopsy found no signs of trauma that would have contributed to her passing.
For those who might not remember, Panettiere was found unresponsive on August 16 at an apartment complex in Greenville, South Carolina, where she’d been staying. Authorities responded after getting a report of cardiac arrest. Her on-and-off boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother Zach Hickerson were both at the scene and were the ones who called 911.
Paramedics reportedly performed over 40 minutes of CPR and other advanced life-saving efforts before Panettiere was pronounced dead. Zach Hickerson later told TMZ that his brother Brian had given her Narcan, the medication used to reverse opioid overdoses — after they found her unconscious, but it wasn’t enough to save her.
The Drug Enforcement Administration got involved, and sources say investigators are digging into whether Panettiere may have unknowingly taken a counterfeit pill that was laced with fentanyl. DEA agents and authorities out in the Los Angeles area have reportedly been questioning multiple people connected to the case, trying to trace exactly where the drugs came from and whether somebody could be held criminally responsible for supplying her with a lethal dose.
Panettiere had been so transparent about her struggles for years. She’d opened up publicly about battling addiction to alcohol and opioids since she was a teenager, and she also spoke candidly about dealing with postpartum depression after welcoming her daughter, Kaya, with her ex, Ukrainian boxer Wladimir Klitschko, back in 2014. On top of all that, she was still grieving the sudden 2023 death of her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, who passed at just 28 from heart complications. She once told People magazine it was her job to protect him, calling their bond unshakeable.
Fentanyl and other synthetic opioids are now tied to more than half of all overdose deaths in the United States, and recent CDC data show they played a role in over 35,000 deaths nationwide in the past year alone. Panettiere’s story is a devastating reminder of just how unforgiving this drug crisis has become, no fame, no fortune, and no support system is fully immune to it.
