“Hair Love” Wins Best Short Film At The 2020 Oscars!

Hair Love,” the heartwarming film that inspires and encourages acceptance of natural hair has won an Oscar! That’s right!

Writer/director/producer and former NFL pro Matthew A. Cherry, and producer Karen Rupert Toliver took the stage and accepted the award for “Best Animated Short Film,” and even honored it to the late NBA star Kobe Bryant.

Cherry said he made Hair Love “because we want to see more representation in animation and to normalize black hair.” This is now the second time in three years that a professional athlete has won this category. Kobe Bryant and animator Glen Keane won the trophy back in 2018 for his film, “Dear Basketball.”

While accepting the Award, Rupert Toliver said,

”We have a firm belief that representation matters deeply.”
