In 1940, Hattie McDaniel became the first black Oscar winner!
Hattie McDaniel won an Oscar for best-supporting actress for her role as Mammy in ‘Gone With the Wind.’ Despite her accomplishments, she was sat in the back and the after-party for the ceremony was held at a location that said no blacks allowed. It would be another 51 years before a black woman would win an Oscar again, and that would be Whoopi Goldberg for her performance in Ghost.
Sidney Poitier becomes the first black man to win the Best Actor Oscar in 1964
Poitier won for his role in ‘Lilies of the Field,’ despite the major step towards diversity, many were offended when a white Ann Bancroft gave him a kiss on the cheek while giving him his Oscar.
In 1973 Marlon Brando Refused To Accept His Oscar
The ‘Godfather’ actor declined his Oscar and sent Native American actress Sacheen Littlefeather on his behalf. She said that Brando “very regretfully” could not accept the award, as he was protesting Hollywood’s portrayal of Native Americans in film. Many applauded her, but others booed her off stage.
