A gun instructor is facing backlash after using racial stereortypes towards his black students during a class.

Vegas Conceal and Carry Weapons owner Nephi “Khaliki” Oliva was teaching a class on Sunday when he showed two slideshows titled “Firearm Safety for White People” and “Fire Safety for Black People.” One of the slides displayed a masked black man wearing baggy pants and flashing gang signs with a gun. Accompanying the slide was a statement that reads: “Always lick the chicken grease off your fingers before shooting.”

More slides presented other stereotypes of Black people
It continued with the following phrases on each slide: “Always shoot the gun right side up,” “always make sure there’s a white person around so you have someone to blame for everything that goes wrong in your life” and “always aim for small children to ensure you actually hit another gang member,”

Gun instructor’s reaction to the backlash
The video clip of the racist class lesson went viral on social media, leading to Oliva facing backlash for using racial stereotypes. He said in a statement that his slides were not “racist” and added that people of all races were equally targeted.
“I am an Afghan American and I come from a Muslim family. For you to use my comedy and my event as fodder for your political nonsense is shameful. That audience was MY audience and it was comprised of a wide mix of races. Those of you missing the true context of my humor. I am going somewhere meaningful and you seeing it out of full context is unfortunate,” he wrote in a series of tweets.

Accoridng to the New York Post, the lesson took place while Republican candidates and officeholders were listed as special guests at the event. Congressional candidate Noah Malegeri felt Oliva said nothing wrong during the presentation.
“I am a strong supporter of firearms education and the Second Amendment,” he wrote. “I have never attended one of Nephi’s classes before and have no role in the curriculum, but I don’t believe that Nephi is in any way racist. I understand that his presentation included content directed at several different groups represented in the audience but that he mostly directed his humor at himself. The constant ‘moral outrage’ attacks on free speech and comedy in particular have become tedious, and are resoundingly rejected by most regular people, including me,” he wrote on Twitter.
