Gospel Legend Bishop Rance Allen Passes Away At Age 71

Socialites, it’s with our deepest regret to inform you that Gospel singing legend Bishop Rance Allen has passed away.

According to his family, he died Saturday morning at the age of 71. The Church of God in Christ also announced the news in a statement saying: “Bishop Allen’s unique vocal ministry was an indispensable sound within the Church Of God In Christ and Christendom,” the Pentecostal–Holiness Christian denomination organization said.

“His gift transcended the boundaries of musical genre as he remained a sought after personality called to perform on global venues.”

Allen, who was known as the ‘Father of Contemporary Gospel Music,” was also a pianist and guitarist. He formed The Rance Allen Group with his brothers Tom, a drummer, and Steve, a guitarist, in 1969, according to a biography on his website. The group was nominated for Grammy Awards in 1981, 1991, and 2004 and inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 1998. In addition to that, they also won Stellar Awards  named Traditional Duo/Chorus Group of the Year for their recording “Live from San Francisco.”

  1. Rance Allen will certainly be missed. He was multi-talented and a gifted artist. When I gave my life to Christ, I vowed to clean up my lifestyle and Mr. Allen provided me with the sweet, sweet, sound of gospel soul that nourished my spirit. Ooooh, he could sing; and sing he did. I thank God that we existed in the same space at the same time because his music got me through. Rest in peace Mr. Allen and perhaps, teach the Angels a thing or two.
