US Olympic gold medialist Sunisa Lee revealed on TikTok that she received a lot of hate messages from her own community after posting a photo of her boyfriend.

On December 30, Alix Phom, a Hmong American like Lee, said he fully supported her relationship with Jaylin Smith. In the video, Phom posted a photo of the couple and gave it a thumbs up with the following caption: “I know that Sunisa will be judged by certain eyes in the Hmong Community because her man is Black. LOVE is LOVE, no matter what race or gender you are. Keep doing you, QUEEN.” The video was posted on December 30.

Lee commented on the video and thanked Phom for his support and revealed she received a lot of hate comments over the photo: “I’ve received so much hate. [They only] support me when it’s beneficial for them never when it comes to my happiness.”

Lee posted the photo on December 26 on her Instagram page but due to the amount of backlash, Lee disabled the comment section on the post.
