OMG! German Driver Put His Tesla On Autopilot, Fell Asleep & Woke Up On A Police Chase
It is reported that on December 29, around 12 p.m. local time, police in Germany spotted a Tesla speeding down the Autobahn. The car was leaving Bamberg and headed towards Bayreuth.
Bavarian Police officials claim officers tried to pull the car over, but the vehicle did not stop. Officers said the vehicle was traveling about 70 miles per hour, and kept that same speed throughout the chase — not speeding up or slowing down, because the car was on autopilot.
When officers drove up next to the Tesla’s driver’s side window, they discovered that the driver — who was identified as a 45-year-old male — had his seat reclined, eyes closed and hands nowhere near the steering wheel.
After about 15 minutes into the police chase, the driver eventually woke up and realized he was caught up in a pursuit, and proceeded to follow the officers’ instructions to pull his Tesla over.
Besides falling asleep behind the wheel, officers also believed that the 45-year-old driver might have been under the influence of drugs while driving.
Upon the driver pulling his car over, police discovered that the driver had put a “steering wheel weight in the footwell” of the car’s driver’s side — which police say, “ticked the vehicle’s safety system by pretending that the driver’s hand was on the wheel.”
The driver is now under investigation for criminal endangerment of traffic, and his license has since been suspended.
