#Socialites, get into this: Another couple is calling it quits BUT they’re doing things on their own terms.
According to the @NewYorkTimes, former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and Chirlane McCray announced Wednesday that they are separating after nearly 30 years of marriage. The ex-couple revealed the big news during an interview with the outlet.
Now, while most would assume that their separation means they will eventually divorce, they made it clear that it won’t happen. They told the Times they do not plan to go down that road but will still date other people. Though separated, both say they will also continue to share the Park Slope townhouse where they raised their two children. So how did they come to this decision? Well… De Blasio told the outlet:
“Everything was this overwhelming schedule, this sort of series of tasks. And that kind of took away a little bit of our soul.” McCray told the Times that she and her husband first discussed the subject of a separation during an evening after binge-watching TV, when de Blasio asked her why she isn’t “lovey-dovey anymore.”
“You can feel when things are off, and you don’t want to live that way,” de Blasio said, while McCray added, “You can’t fake it.”
“I can look back now and say, ‘Here were these inflection points where we should have been saying something to each other,’” he said elsewhere during the interview. “And I think one of the things I should have said more is: ‘Are you happy? What will make you happy? What’s missing in your life?’”

So What Do They Plan To Do Next?
While they didn’t go into full details about it, the two who married in 1994, and have two children, who are now in their 20s explained, “I just want to have fun,” McCray said before quickly turning to de Blasio adding: “It’s not that we haven’t had fun.”
“Thank you, honey,” he said, according to The New York Times.
More On Bill de Blasio
The 62-year-old was first elected as mayor of New York City in 2013. However, he left office on Jan. 1, 2022, making way for new Mayor Eric Adams, who was sworn in after New Year’s Eve. Instead, Mr. De Blasio wanted to run for governor. However, he announced that he was not running after all.
“This is the right place for me to share some news with you,” he previously said in a video recorded on a block in Brooklyn where he lives. “No, I am not going to be running for governor in New York State. But I am going to devote every fiber of my being to fight inequality in the state of New York. We got a lot to do. Together.”
