Seven years after Amber Guyger was convicted of murdering Botham Jean, the former Dallas police officer has been granted parole, WFAA confirmed.

Guyger was sentenced to 10 years in prison after shooting Jean inside his apartment in 2018. She testified that she mistakenly entered his home, believing it was her own, and assumed he was an intruder.

The parole decision comes days after what would have been Jean’s 35th birthday—and nearly three years before Guyger’s scheduled release date of September 29, 2029, which would have been Jean’s 38th birthday. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice has not announced when she will be released.

During the trial, prosecutors argued that Guyger missed several signs indicating she was on the wrong floor and at the wrong apartment, including Jean’s red doormat, the apartment’s layout, and the smell of marijuana. Jean was inside eating ice cream and watching television when Guyger entered and shot him twice, striking him once in the chest.

Prosecutors also argued that Guyger focused on texting her partner rather than immediately helping Jean, who was lying on the floor as she waited for first responders.

Guyger was fired from the Dallas Police Department days after the September 24, 2018, shooting. Her appeals challenging the conviction were denied in 2021 and early 2022.
