A California family got an unexpected surprise when they checked their home security cameras and saw their Golden Retriever greeting an alleged burglar with a toy instead of chasing him away.
According to NBC 7, the incident occurred at the San Diego home of Dante Rowley and his family after a man allegedly entered the residence using a ladder to access a second-floor window.
Once inside, investigators said the suspect removed his clothes and shoes before making himself at home. Authorities allege the man helped himself to yogurt, turkey, and cheese from the family’s refrigerator before eventually taking a nap inside the home.
Nash the Golden Retriever Welcomed the Stranger
While two of the family’s three dogs were home during the break-in, it was 4-year-old Golden Retriever Nash who stole the spotlight.
Rather than barking or acting aggressively, Nash approached the alleged intruder carrying one of his toys.
“Nash is not the greatest guard dog. We thought he was going to bark at people and he did the exact opposite,” homeowner Dante Rowley told NBC 7. The family’s security footage captured the friendly interaction, which quickly spread online.
Police Arrest Suspect After Failed Escape Attempt
When officers arrived at the home, Nash reportedly greeted them with the same friendly attitude.
Police said the suspect attempted to escape through a bathroom window, but officers had already surrounded the property and were waiting in the backyard.
The man was taken into custody and charged with burglary, along with several other charges unrelated to the alleged home invasion.
