Boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. breaks his silence on the “lies and negative” reports claiming he is facing two felony charges, including theft and fraud, over an alleged $200,000 bad check cut for an AP watch he bought in Las Vegas in 2024.
Despite making over an estimated billion dollars across his 50-0 boxing career, social media users couldn’t help but question whether or not Mayweather has gone broke after an ESPN article surfaced on Tuesday (June 16).
The sports publication reported that Gold and Beyond — a high-end Las Vegas resale boutique — initially filed a complaint with the Clark County District Attorney’s office in February. Prosecutors then filed a criminal complain on April 27. Three days later, on April 30, prosecutors filed a court order for Mayweather to appear before a judge. The boxer eventually satisfied the order as of this past Monday (June 15), when Mayweather’s lawyer appeared in a hearing on his behalf.
According to the complaint, Mayweather purchased an Audemars Piguet on December 25, 2024. He allegedly wrote Gold and Beyond a check for $200,000 check, dated December 31, 2024. However, the jeweler alleges the check, from a Wells Fargo Bank account, did not clear, further alleging Mayweather never paid.

Mayweather is now accused of “theft, value $100,000 or greater” and “draw or pass check with intent to defraud, value $1,200 or greater.”
The complaint further alleges Mayweather wrote the check “in exchange for obtaining property or services” while “knowing that the check would not be paid when presented” due to “insufficient money, property, or credit” in his account to pay in full. The complaint accuses him of doing this “knowingly, feloniously, and without lawful authority.”

If found guilty of fraud, Mayweather could face one to four years in prison and up to a $5,000 fine, plus restitution costs. Additionally, Nevada state law states that a felony theft charge carries prison sentences of one to 20 years and up to $15,000 in fines.
According to Marc Cook, the attorney representing the jewelry store, their client gave Mayweather several chances to make things right before taking legal action, resulting in the delay. Cook, of Cook & Kelesis, told ESPN:
“The reason for the delay is that my guy trusted Mayweather and was trying to give him every opportunity to make good on that. And it got to the point where he wasn’t getting responses and wasn’t getting money for a watch that Mayweather had for well over a year.”
Cook continued to share that his client never wanted to press charges against Mayweather, instead wanting to resolve things out of court. However, after exhausting all their options and allegedly being “ignored,” they filed a complaint.

Additionally, Mayweather’s attorney, Adrian Lobo, told ESPN that he “had absolutely no intent to defraud” to the jeweler. Lobo said her client had a long business relationship with the store’s owner long before and even after the alleged December 2024 transaction. Lobo continued to claim hat the store’s owner did the most in seeking a criminal complaint with the DA instead of filing a civil claim to resolve the dispute.
“This matter does not belong in the criminal courts. And Mr. Mayweather looks forward to being vindicated through the court proceedings.”
According to Lobo, Mayweather is due back in court ion September 17. Meanwhile, Mayweather has since broken his silence to address the reports claiming he’s facing two felony charges. On Wednesday (June 17), he took to his Instagram and told his followers that it’s all “lies” and more “negative news” to try and bring down another successful and strong Black man.
In a post, he wrote, “Good press, bad press, facts or fiction… pick your poison. Every headline keeps my name in circulation and everything in motion. I appreciate it all. Keep the press coming!”
In the caption, he added:
“Lies and negative news always travel faster than the truth. That’s just the way things work. Unhappy people love bad news.
