In case you missed it, singer Victoria Monét jokingly crowned Drake a “professional trick” in a new sit-down with Complex Music. The 6 God caught wind of the convo and popped up in the Instagram comments with a full-blown essay on why he spends the way he spends. Short answer: he says it’s about joy, not about getting anything back.

For those who didn’t catch it, the whole thing started when Victoria, out promoting her amazing new album Frequency of Love, sat down with Complex’s Jillian Superstar and got into the age-old debate: what counts as tricking, and what’s just being generous? Around the 13-minute mark, Drake’s name came up, and Vic didn’t hesitate. She called him a professional trick and cracked that he’s a “trick-or-treat master.” She also made clear she was keeping it light. In her eyes, a man sending a Cartier bracelet straight to your door doesn’t automatically count as tricking.
Under the post, the Iceman came through with a polite and very clear response. He said, “There’s a return on investment in your soul for doing things for people who you feel deserve it. Whether you feel that way in the moment and they prove otherwise over time or it’s a gesture to acknowledge consistent love and loyalty the difference is there isn’t an expectation on the other side. It’s self awareness that you have been blessed with an obscene amount of money and joy is the emotion that excites you the most. So once you have experienced enough joy from material things for yourself sometimes the only way is to see the joy on faces after unexpected gestures for others.
He then he drew the line, plain and simple: “Transactional exchanges with the expectation of intimacy are a different frequency.”
Now, this isn’t the first time Drake has pushed back on the T-word. During an August livestream with BenDaDonnn, he said he doesn’t like the word “tricking” and that it’s just nice making someone else feel good.
