President Donald Trump’s latest comments about poverty numbers are raising eyebrows online.
Just hours after claiming his administration has “the BEST FINANCIAL NUMBERS EVER”, Trump told reporters outside the White House on Sunday that America also has “the best poverty numbers ever”—a phrase that quickly sparked confusion and ridicule across social media.
Speaking before heading to Illinois to attend the 2026 Presidents Cup golf tournament at Medinah Country Club, the convicted felon said: “We have the best, uh, I guess you could say poverty. They talk poverty.
“We have the best poverty numbers ever in the history of our country. In other words, there’s less poverty now than at any time in the history of our country.”
According to recently released U.S. Census Bureau data, the poverty rate did fall to a historic low of 10.2% last year. However, experts have warned that the figure may not account for the impact of upcoming federal policy changes, including cuts to Medicaid and food assistance.
“The main issue for most individuals is going to be the fact that prices and inflation is outstripping wage growth, and so that’s obviously some diminution of real incomes for some people,” Steven Durlauf of the University of Chicago told Stateline.
Still, it was Trump’s unusual phrasing—not just the statistic itself—that had social media users talking, with many questioning his description of poverty as a positive measure.
