Donald Trump’s administration has revealed its plans to livestream the firing squad execution of Nidal Malik Hasan. He is the former United States Army psychiatrist convicted of killing 13 people, injuring 32, during a shooting at Fort Hood, Texas in 2009.

The Pentagon confirmed the news on Thursday (October 8) after President Trump ordered the Army to execute Nidal Hasan, and by firing squad, last Friday (October 2). This marks the Army’s first execution since 1961. As for the method, the military has not used it since 1945. Additionally, it’s reported that they don’t even have a modern procedure for administering a firing squad execution.
Now, Hasan — who has described the attack as an act of jihad — is scheduled to be excused on December 3. His firing squad execution will take place at the same base where he committed the attack.

According to ABC News, public executions were once a common event in the U.S. However, states began restricting and abolishing the prated in the mid 19th and early 20th centuries. The last public execution in America took place in Kentucky in 1936.
Now, confirming the news today was Department of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. He told the press that officials intentionally chose Hasan’s execution location at Fort Hood because that’s where he killed others. His 1 p.m. execution time is also symbolic as it approximately mirrors the time the 2009 shooting began. Hegseth said:
“He’s gonna get a firing squad of soldiers. As it should be. We’ll make sure that people are able to watch it. That it’s public. Because people need to understand that there’s serious consequences for these types of things.”
