A family in Detroit, Michigan is grieving twice after a funeral home admitted to “accidentally cremating” their mother. The woman is identified as 61-year-old Kimberlly Kaye Moore. Her family — including 5 children and 28 grandchildren — said she died on September 3 after a battle with endometrial cancer.

Moore’s viewing was scheduled to take place at the Hutchinson Funeral Home from 4-7 p.m. on Friday (September 18). However, beforehand, her family visited the funeral home, they realized she wasn’t there. Moore’s daughter, Bianca Robinson, said she went to do her mother’s makeup. Upon asking to see her mother’s body, the mortician unzipped the body bag.

When Robinson attempted to confirm the body as her mother, she realized her birthmark on her toe wasn’t there. She told NBC’s WDIV Local 4 Detroit:

“When he unzipped the bag, I looked at the toe, and I was like, it’s not a mole on her toe, and I turned around, and I looked at him. I said this is not my mama, sir. He said I’m so sorry.’ He said your mom must’ve been cremated when she first got here. Because it was two ladies that came here when your mom came in, and we must’ve cremated her. I said, ‘How do you make a mistake like that?’”

Moore’s son, Byron Moore, continued to question how the funeral home could make such a mistake. He said, “We’re trying to understand how you could be so careless to do such a horrible thing.”

When local media attempted to speak with the funeral home, they were turned away and told to speak with its public relations representative, Mario Marrow. Morrow told WDIV:

“We’re going to get to the bottom of it, and if the funeral home is found at fault, we’re going to make the family whole. It’s just a bad situation.”

Meanwhile, ABC’s WXYZ 7 News Detroit was able to get a brief and curt comment from the funeral home’s Vice President of Operations, Joseph Hutchinson Jr. He said:

“We’re investigating it. I’m not on—No, no, no comment. My comment is you can contact [my publicist]. Ok? Thank you. That’s my comment.”
