‘Cuties’ Director Reveals Netflix Poster Controversy Resulted In Death Threats

Cuties‘ director Maïmouna Doucouré reveals that after the Netflix poster for the film released, the controversy and backlash resulted in multiple death threats received. Doucouré explains, “I received numerous attacks on my character from people who had not seen the film, who thought I was actually making a film that was apologetic about hypersexualization of children. I also received numerous death threats.”

She says things moved quickly due to the pandemic and hadn’t seen the artwork before its debut. “Things happened fairly quickly because, after the delays [due to the pandemic], I was completely concentrating on the film’s release in France. I discovered the poster as the same time as the American public. My reaction? It was a strange experience. I hadn’t seen the poster until after I started getting all these reactions on social media, direct messages from people, attacks on me. I didn’t understand what was going on. That was when I went and saw what the poster looked like.”

While ‘Cuties‘ was an award winner at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, once Netflix debuted the poster for Doucouré’s debut feature, social media immediately called out the streaming service and executives for approving the cover which featured young girls in skin-tight two pieces bent over, squatting, crawling, and accentuating their bottoms. Meanwhile, the French version of the poster featured a line-up of young girls holding shopping bags, having fun. After the backlash, Netflix, immediately apologized and corrected their mistake.
