The City of Miami Beach is cracking down on wild and unruly tourists ahead of this year’s Spring Break vacation with a viral “Spring Breakup” PSA. The campaign’s objective is to discourage spring breakers from engaging in violent and illegal behavior.

On Friday (March 1), a new video campaign was released on the City of Miami Beach’s official YouTube account. In the now-viral clip, officials from the Florida city reiterated their plans to implement stricter rules for college students and tourists visiting Miami this March. The video follows an initial press release shared on February 13.
In the statement, Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner said, “The measures I proposed approved by our Commission will ensure that our residents, businesses, and visitors are safe and thrive during Spring Break. Everyone is invited to enjoy the beauty and hospitality of our City. But we are a law and order City and we will enforce our laws all year round, including during March’s Spring Break.”

Said measures include: “bag checks, restricted beach access, DUI checkpoints, license plate readers and heightened police enforcement for consumption of alcohol in public, drug possession and violent behavior.” Stricter measures include a flat rate parking fee of $30 for garages and surface lots, plus $516 towing fees with an additional $30 administrative fee for non-residents.
Also, during the “highest-impact weekends,” typically March 7-10 and March 14-17, the city anticipates the largest crowds then and will be enforcing the rules even harder. All parking garages in South Beach will be closed from Thursday at 6 a.m. to Monday at 6 a.m. and the flat rate parking fee will increase to $100. Additional measures are being implemented and further details are outlined in the press release.
Chief Wayne Jones also warned, “If you are looking to cause problems, do not come to Miami Beach. We are fully prepared to ensure our city is safe for everyone. Our message is simple: we want people to enjoy their time here, but will not tolerate the behavior we have witnessed in the past few years.”

Furthermore, in Miami Beach’s “Spring Breakup” video campaign, the incoming measures are again stated while also referencing the lawless behavior and deadly violence that the city has experienced and labeled its “breaking point.”
Last March, there were two deadly shootings that occurred in South Beach during Spring Break and a total of 573 arrests were made, according to The New York Times. In March 2022, there were a reported 615 arrests.
