According to one of Griner’s Russian lawyers, Maria Blagovolina, the Phoenix Mercury basketball player ended up cutting her hair because of the harsh and frigid temperatures in the Mordovia penal colony where she was serving her nine-year sentence.

Blagovolina said, “It’s very cold in there and every time she washed her hair she got cold and would get a chill.” Blagovolina also said, “She should have waited until New Year’s Day.”

It was even revealed that Griner ended up catching the flu recently, and to better prepare for the colder months ahead, she chopped her dreads off.
