Brittney Griner’s emotional recount of her time in a Russian prison is set to be revealed in an upcoming interview on a special edition of ABC’s 20/20. The WNBA star will share her experience for the first time since her detainment in February 2022.

In a preview clip, Griner is seen opening up to Good Morning America host Robin Roberts about the challenging conditions she faced during her 10-month ordeal. From her initial arrest for possession of cannabis oil at a Moscow airport to her release in December 2022, Griner will provide a candid look into her time behind bars.

During the interview, Griner talks about the emotional toll of her imprisonment, revealing moments of fear and even worse: death. While looking back at the moments she even felt dehumanized in the Russian penal colony, where basic necessities like soap and toilet paper were scarce, she provides heartbreaking details of her suicidal thoughts and the overwhelming sense of uncertainty after being handed down a nine-year prison sentence. “I was just so scared for everything,” Griner tells Roberts.

As traumatizing of an experience that was, Griner was ultimately released in a prisoner swap in December 2022.

Following her release, the 32-year-old expressed her gratitude to members of the Biden administration who helped secure her release from Russia. “President Biden, you brought me home and I know you are committed to bringing Paul Whelan and all Americans home too,” Griner said at the time in a post on Instagram.

As Griner continues her basketball career with the Phoenix Mercury, she’s now preparing to release her memoir, “Coming Home,” which delves into her traumatic experience in Russia even more.

The interview special is scheduled to air on May 1, offering viewers a glimpse into Griner’s journey of survival and strength.
