Letby has been charged with murder in the deaths of five baby boys and two baby girls. She’s also facing charges for the attempted murder of an additional five boys and five girls.

The incidents occurred between 2015 and 2016 at her workplace, the Countess of Chester Hospital in northwest England. Prosecutors say in some of the deaths, Letby allegedly injected air into the bloodstream of the infants.

Prosecutor Nick Johnson said that beginning in 2015, the hospital would see a significant rise in the number of babies that were dying or suffering “serious catastrophic collapses.”

Johnson added, “Babies who had not been unstable at all suddenly deteriorated. Sometimes babies who had been sick, but then been on the mend suddenly deteriorated for no apparent reason.”

In two alleged attempted murders, Letby was accused of poisoning two infant boys with insulin two days after they were born. Fortunately, they they both survived after help from other medical staff members.

It is reported that in one of the alleged attacks, one of the children’s mothers walked in on Letby as she was allegedly killing her baby. Apparently, the mother did not realize what was happening and was then told by the nurse that the blood from his mouth was due to a tube.

While Letby is accused of murdering the baby boy, it is also reported that she is accused of attempting to murder his twin the next day.

In another alleged attack, it is reported that a doctor interrupted the nurse allegedly trying to kill a 98-minute-old baby. The doctor, identified as British pediatric consultant Ravi Jayaram, began to connect Letby to all of the unexplained deaths.

Jayaram says he walked into a room where Letby was standing over a newborn girl in an incubator, with “dangerously” low oxygen levels. He felt “uncomfortable” with Letby left all alone with the 12-week premature baby, so he rushed over and saw her chest was not moving and her breathing tube was removed.

Jayaram said Letby made “no effort to help” the child and soon realized that an alarm connected to the infant seemed to be silenced. The baby sadly died three days later, following another incident where Letby was left alone with the child.

In response to the allegations and charges, Letby denies all 22 counts against her and pleaded not guilty. Letby’s trial is currently underway at Manchester Crown Court. It is reported that the jury has been told that the case may last up to six months.
