An Arizona State University student is fighting back after a viral arrest led to criminal charges—and allegations that a police officer groped and assaulted her.

Eryn Bonner’s attorney, Benjamin Taylor, tells TMZ that the City of Tempe is retaliating against his client after she reported the alleged misconduct. “The City of Tempe’s decision to file charges is vindictive and political prosecution designed to protect their police department from liability after she reported being groped and assaulted by the cop that is seen on video,” Taylor said.

The controversy stems from a July 19 confrontation on Tempe’s Mill Avenue, a popular nightlife destination for college students. Police-released video appears to show officers attempting to arrest several people when Bonner approached and repeatedly told them to let one of the men go. Authorities allege Bonner interfered with the arrest and struck an officer several times before she was taken into custody. Her attorney disputes that account, accusing police of escalating the situation and using excessive force.

Bonner now faces two misdemeanor charges—disorderly conduct and interfering with police—after the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office declined to pursue felony charges.

Bonner remains an ASU student completing her senior year.

She was previously involved with the ASU Stunt Devils, a student organization separate from the university’s official athletics program. An ASU representative said her time with the team ended before the incident.

As Bonner fights the criminal case, her attorney continues calling for scrutiny of the officers involved, including his allegation that she was groped during the arrest.
