Tom Hanks recently spoke with BBC and opened up and said how he wants Idris Elba to take on the legacy of ‘James Bond.’
“Understand this,” Hanks said. “James Bond has a licence to kill. I would issue that licence to Idris Elba just based on the work that I’ve seen him do.”

Folks have been trying to put Elba in that role for over a decade and the actor, shockingly expressed that he’s not interested in the gig. “It is not a goal for my career,” Elba said. “I don’t think that, you know, playing Bond will satisfy some of my personal goals. It will definitely satisfy the will of a nation. I’m not gonna lie, every corner of the world I go, and I’m talking about different cultures, they always go ‘Bond,’ and I feel it is beyond me at this junction. It’s beyond me. You know, it’s not a question of, should I, do I, will I. It is what the will of the nation dictates sometimes.”
As we previously reported, Elba has made public statements that he wants to give up his acting career to focus on music. During an interview with Vanity Fair in the 2022 Hollywood Issue of the magazine, Elba shared that he hopes to “lean away from the acting work” to commit his full attention to making new music.
“Some may think, ‘Well, it will be the death of your acting if your music’s s—.’ I’ve dealt with the internal struggle of that over the years. So now I’m at peace and I’ve chosen: This is what I’m doing, and I’m going to do it. Some will love it and some will hate it,” Elba shared of seeking music to Vanity Fair.
He added, “The thing about making music is it’s a very consuming process. It’s very difficult to shoot a movie and then go off into the studio or make a song. It’s like trying to build a soufflé while making a brick wall.”
Music isn’t something new for the actor, a few years ago he spoke with People magazine and said he has been in love with music since he was 4 years old.
“I’ve worked my whole life to play at Coachella. I made it at 46!” he said at the time. “I nearly passed out when I found out.”
Who knows if the James Bond film will get him back into getting in front of the camera. As we all know, the James Bond film series is one of the longest-running and most successful franchises in the history of cinema. The series is centered around the fictional British Secret Service agent, James Bond, also known by his code name “007.” Bond is a suave, skilled, and resourceful spy who takes on dangerous missions to protect the world from various villains and criminal organizations.
It’s worth noting that the James Bond film series has seen multiple actors portraying the iconic character over the years, including Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan, and Timothy Dalton, among others. Each actor brought their own interpretation and style to the role, while the core elements of action, espionage, and Bond’s signature wit and charm remained consistent throughout the series.
