Another day, another promise. This one comes right on the heels of Trump’s $5,000 pledge to every American adult if republican take the house during the midterms. Now, he’s back with another big one.
He says his administration is about to cut $500 rebate checks to almost one million people who have Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare, coverage. The checks would go out to enrollees living in 30 states. Trump claims these folks got overcharged on their exchange fees while Joe Biden was in office.

Trump made the announcement in a recorded video posted to the White House’s X account on Thursday. He said the checks are coming soon. “The relief begins with refunding everyone who was overcharged, and the rebates are going out in just a few weeks,” Trump said.
Not everybody with ACA coverage is getting this money. Only enrollees who don’t get premium assistance qualify for a check. That’s a big deal because a lot of people who use the ACA marketplace depend on that assistance to keep their monthly bills manageable. So while the announcement sounds like a win for “the people,” it’s really only reaching a slice of folks.
The White House put out a fact sheet blaming the Biden administration for sitting on extra money that should’ve gone back to people who paid higher premiums. But nobody at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has confirmed any real details.
As of right now, it’s still not clear where this $500 is even coming from. Nobody’s said if Congress needs to approve it or if the administration can just cut the checks on its own. That’s a huge question mark hanging over the whole announcement.
This whole thing is coming out at a rough time for people trying to afford health insurance. Earlier this year, Republicans in Congress let COVID-era subsidies expire. Those subsidies had been helping millions of people keep their premiums low. Once they disappeared, prices for ACA plans doubled or even tripled for a lot of families. People had to downgrade their coverage or just drop out of the program completely because they couldn’t keep up.
So basically, Trump and Republicans let prices skyrocket, and now Trump’s offering a one-time $500 check to some people as a fix.
