Golden State Valkyries Win First-Ever WNBA Championship After Defeating Atlanta Dream 68-63 In 2026 Finals
As we previously shared, the Valkyries won their first-ever WNBA Championship after defeating the Dream 68-63. Game 7 took place on Saturday (October 31) inside of Chase Center in San Francisco, California. The nail-biting game and series ended with the Valkyries becoming WNBA Champions in just their second year of existence.
On October 5, 2023, the team was first announced as the women’s professional basketball league’s 13th team. In December 2024, the team had its expansion draft. Finally, on May 16, 2025, the Valkyries debuted in their first game, going against the Los Angles Sparks.
Now, on October 31, 2026, they have won their first title in the WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association). They’ve not only made history with their first championship, but they are now the latest expansion team to win a chip overall.
While breaking her silence post-game, Atlanta Dream Forward Reese, sat with her teammates Jordin Canada and Allisha Gray. Overcome with emotion after the disappointing outcome, she remained grateful. She said:
“I mean, yeah, it’s tough. Especially with the good group—great group that I’ve honestly had an honor to battle with all year. They changed my life, and I’m just so grateful for them, and I’m so thankful for them. And, it is tough in the moment, but we’ll be back. And I always say, ‘Delayed, not denied.’ And this is only year three. They got a lot more years left, too. But, I’m just really grateful that I got to go to war with this group, and I would do it again, all over again.”
Reese ended Game 7 of the 2026 WNBA Finals with 8 points, 12 rebounds, one assist, one steal, and two blocks in 33 minutes. She shot 3 of 7 from the field, made 1 of 3 free throws, and committed 4 turnovers.
