An American family has been kicked out of Canada after lying to border patrol officials about their traveling plans and getting caught vacationing in Vancouver.

The family first traveled to Canada on Aug.25, entering British Columbia from Alaska. They informed border patrol guards that they were traveling between Alaska and the other 48 states but were found vacationing in Vancouver on Aug. 29. Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth said in a statement to Glocal News that the group was expected to go straight to the Peace Arch border crossing but decided to take their own route.
He says, “They were supposed to go straight to the Peace Arch border crossing, they did not do that. This is not a game, and we have been very clear that Americans have been told that they have to follow these rules. And clearly, in this case, the family chose not to, and as a result, they face the consequences and have to pay a penalty.”

Officials fined the family with $2,000 for violating Canada’s Quarantine Act, a new order where American travelers are fined for not following the country’s health and safety guidelines. An individual can face up to $750,000 in fines and/order imprisonment for up to six months. American tourists are also banned from traveling through national parks, resting sites, and tourism hot spots and are only required to stop for essentials such as food and sleep.
They are allowed to travel through Canada and the 48 lower states but must use the five designated southern crossings as reported by the media outlet.
