Alabama Woman Sentenced To 20 Years After Pleading Guilty To Killing Accused Rapist

Brittany Smith, a 32-year-old Alabama woman and mother of four, has been sentenced to 20 years after pleading guilty to killing her accused rapist.

On Friday (Oct. 9), Smith entered a plea deal in the murder of Todd Smith, a friend of no relation who she claims strangled and raped her at her home in Stevenson back  in January 2018. Smith’s deal requires her to serve 18 months in a county jail, 18 months of house arrest, and 18.5 years of probation. Her time in jail awaiting trial will be applied to her sentence.

In court, Smith claimed hours after being raped, her brother confronted the accused rapist and begin fighting. Smith says she ended up shooting the deceased after he held her brother in a tight headlock, threatening to kill him and her. The mother of four claimed she should be immune from prosecution under Alabama’s Stand Your Ground law, however, the courts ruled against her argument. Before taking her plea deal, Smith’s case was set to go to trial next month, where she could’ve faced life in prison if convicted.

Smith’s attorney, Ron Smith (no relation), says, “In any case, you’ve got to weigh what you know and can control with what you can’t. We have no control over a jury or a judge that would sentence her.”
