Brandy is breaking her silence after former Bad Boy Records rappers Mase (or MA$E) and Shyne both claimed to have dated her at the same time. She also denounces her brother Ray J‘s wild comments in her defense.

As we previously shared, the two rappers made their claims on Mase and Cam’ron‘s ‘It Is What It Is’ podcast. During the hour-long sit-down, Cam asked Mase and Shyne if he could “set it off” real quick. He then asked, “So, what happened with Brandy and everything?” As Mase busted out in laughter, Shyne smiled and said, “Man.”
As Mase attempted to answer the question, he said, “I was special, you know? He came in and wanted to be special too. So, I had to let him be special.” The men all start laughing. Shyne agreed and said, “No lies told. He was Shaq[uille O’Neal]. He was the champion. He was the MVP. I was Kobe [Bryant], no pun intended ’cause they said Kobe was a special friend of Brandy’s as well.”
Cam started laughing as Shyne continued to claim that Mase was bigger than him and dating with Brandy, as he started to come up in the game and started getting to know her himself. He said, “But uh. I definitely did want to be special. But, I had no idea. What happened was, we had a mutual friend who was a snitch. I think he know who it is and I’m not gonna expose him.” Mase starts laughing. Shyne continued:
“So, I was so excited because [Brandy] is my dream person. I was a poor kid [from] Brooklyn, watching MTV, watching ‘Moesha,’ watching her on BET. And as a dreamer, I’m like, ‘Man, if I ever—if she was to know Shyne? I got that.’ So, when I came up, she was in the crosshairs, I was sniping. But, I had no idea though ’cause, he was special, so he was running that great work so discrettly, so quietly, I had no idea. He was an ultra sniper. But, I was so excited, so I kept telling one of our mutual friends. And he was snitching me out. So, Brandy was like, ‘Yo, who you told you here? How so-and-so know that you here with me right now?’ And I’m like, ‘Awe, man.’ That’s my story.”
Brandy Denies Dating Shyne, Says They Only Had A Platonic Friendship
After the clipped moment went viral, Brandy’s brother, singer Ray J, went nuclear on Mase, Shyne, and Cam’ron. His wild commentary resulted in a back-and-forth on social media. Attempting to bring the drama to an end, Brandy broke her silence on Instagram as she promoted her memoir, ‘Phases.’ She wrote:
“In the late 90’s, I had a platonic friendship with rapper Shyne. In an unfortunate turn of events, that friendship is now being mischaracterized as ‘we dated! Unequivocally, we did not! I’m not sure why an untrue narrative about a scope of what was a friendship more than 20-years ago is being reshaped during his current media interviews. People telling their version of my story is why I am releasing my upcoming memoir, ‘PHASES.’ It’s time to tell my truth and debunk many of the misnomers that people think they know about my life.
Additionally, I rarely release statements and typically ignore stories about me in the headlines even when they’re false. But when I do decide to standup for myself, I handle things on my own. While I love my brother Ray J, I don’t condone or support the messages he’s shared on social media and have not asked him to defend me in any form. #PHASES is available March 31, 2026.”
