NBA legend Ervin “Magic” Johnson is praising God as he celebrates his survival and 35 years of life after announcing his HIV diagnosis.
Johnson first publicly revealed his HIV diagnosis (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) back on November 7, 1991. Johnson shared the news during a press conference. He also announced his immediate retirement from the NBA. However, he later returned to play in the 1992 All-Star Game. He also came back to play in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, as part of the “Dream Team.”
While taking to his X account, 35 years later, on Saturday (November 7), Johnson wrote:
“Look at how far God has brought me since my HIV announcement 35 years ago! It is truly because of His grace and mercy that I am still here and thriving. God never gave up on me, and I kept the faith. He has truly blessed me beyond measure with His unconditional love and kindness. With His guidance, He has continued to open doors I always knew were possible. I am thankful for all of the prayers from my family, friends, and fans throughout the years, and I am a living witness that there’s nothing too hard for God.”
Since revealing his diagnosis in 1991, Johnson has become an advocate for HIV/AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). Johnson has continued to bring awareness to the virus/syndrome — which are classified as both Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) or Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs). However, HIV/AIDS can also be spread through blood or from mother to child during pregnancy or childbirth.
Furthermore, medical experts consider HIV the underlying cause and AIDS is the diagnosis. A person can have HIV for many years without ever developing AIDS. Due to modern science and technology, treatments have progressed since Johnson’s diagnosis.
Medications, called Antiretroviral Therapy (ART), now allow for people living with HIV to keep the virus under control and prevent it from progressing to AIDS. While many have passed from HIV/AIDS complications, modern medication now allows for positive patients to live long, healthy lives.
