Fast-rising rapper Trim is sharing her thoughts on fans calling her the new “Princess of Rap,” and she slams critics comparing her to Nicki Minaj. The 19-year-old Charleston, South Carolina rapper recently spoke with NME about her skyrocketing career.
From her breakout single “Boat,” to the remixes featuring YK Niece and BunnaB, and Pooh Shiesty, to her song “Nobody” featuring Monaleo to her viral track “Coconut Water,” Trim, born Ahlaisha Kornickey, continues to quickly climb the charts and stairs to stardom.
However, her catchy lyrics, unique look, theatrical and fast flow, and variable tone — stemming from her Gullah Geechee accent — have some people quickly comparing her to Nicki Minaj, who is known for her charismatic rap personality.

According to Trim, she has a hard time finding the similarities outside of both being female rappers. Trim told NME, “Honestly… I don’t really get it. ‘Coconut Water’ don’t sound nothing like nobody. Not even Beyoncé.”
During the interview, Trim also spoke about fans dubbing her the new “Princess of Rap.” She shrugged and said, “The fans are calling me it. When you’re around legendary people, they don’t even have to call you the ‘princess of rap’. That already stands.”
Despite her larger-than-life personality, Trim recalled being that “shy kid who grew up in Charleston, South Carolina.” Recalling her younger years, she said, “I was very to myself.” She said she was very envious of others around her who were more outgoing. She said, “Everybody around me had explosive personalities. I had to learn how to gain that.”
Despite being shy back then, she’s become grateful for the time she had to build her confidence. Before venturing into rap, Trim said she wasn’t chasing fame. She only wanted to “find her purpose” — which she ended up discovering through music.
