A male patient who is currently being treated for the coronavirus suffered from a four-hour erection due to blood clots.

The New York Post reports a 62-year-old man started experiencing a painful erection known as priapism while receiving treatment at a hospital in Le Chesnay, France. Doctors tried to alleviate the issue by placing an ice pack on his genitals but the quick solution didn’t help. Instead, a needle was used to drain the blood from the man’s penis and they discovered it was full of blood clots. The American Journal of Emergency Medicine said it was normal for coronavirus patients to have blood clots but this was the first case involving priapism.
“The clinical and laboratory presentation in our patient strongly suggests priapism related to SARS-CoV-2 infection,”

In the article, doctors also noted there needs to be more research to find the link between priapism and COVID-19.
“Although the arguments supporting a causal link between COVID-19 and priapism, as well as the ischemic mechanism for priapism, are very strong in our case, reports of further cases would strengthen the evidence. The clinical and laboratory presentation in our patient strongly suggests priapism related to SARS-CoV-2 infection. This medical emergency should be recognized by healthcare professionals and treated promptly to prevent immediate and chronic functional complications.”
