According to 17-year-old Zaya Wade, her famed and retired NBA player dad Dwyane Wade can be “kind of intimidating” to her dates.
While speaking with Seventeen for their new cover story, Zaya Wade opened up about her father Dwyane Wade, 43, and stepmother, famed actress Gabrielle Union, 52. During the interview, Zaya reveals how the parentals really feel about her dating. Zaya ultimately admits that her father Dwyane can be “intimidating” to her dates. She says:
“They’re really cool about it. Me and my stepmom love to dish the dirt and tap into the high school gossip. She gets excited for me when I’m like, ‘Oh, I like this person.'”
Zaya notes that her parents are actually okay with her dating people and even encourage her to meet the people that she’s into. However, on the flip side, she says her dad does try to scare away any of her potential suitors. She admits:
“My dad…he tries to scare any person I have [an] interest in. He’s kind of intimidating. The people I’ve dated have all been afraid of him in the first interaction. He’s gigantic and has this deep, booming voice.”
Fortunately, Zaya reveals that although her dad Dwyane can be “intimidating” to her dates, it doesn’t last long. She explains, “But the facade only lasts for so long and you actually see his real personality. He’s a teddy bear.”

Zaya Wade previously opened up about her father Dwyane Wade’s influence a few years ago. Speaking with Harper Bazaar, for the ‘Icons for 2023’ series, Zaya said:
“My dad is who truly inspires me the most. Kids always tend to look up to their parents, but not only did I idolize him growing up and see him as a real person, I realize that he has played such an essential role in supporting me and the ways I choose to present myself to the world. He’s been so supportive and my biggest advocate. He took the time and learned and grew. I want to have that same mentality going through anything in life.”

Zaya, who came out as transgender in 2020, continued to explain:
“Coming out is such a big change. It’s hard to navigate. We’ve all learned more about each other and the way we can coexist and grow together in this crazy world, especially in the public eye. It’s like a spotlight is always on you. At the end of the day though, we are a family, and we support and love each other and we are grateful.”
Zaya is Dwyane’s second-born child. He shares Zaya, 17, and son Zaire Wade, 22, with his ex-wife Siohvaughn Funches. He also shares a son, Xavier, 11, with Aja Metoyer. Plus, Dwyane and his wife Gabrielle Union share daughter Kaavia James Union Wade, 6. The couple are also the legal guardian of Dwyane’s nephew, Dahveon Morris, 21.
