Charlamagne Tha God says he regrets his past remarks about Young Thug wearing dresses when the rapper was first coming up in the music industry. In a recent interview with VLAD TV, Charlamagne makes it no secret that he wasn’t exactly fond of Thug’s choice of attire in his early years. But looking back on it now, he admits that his thoughts about what others wear — Thug, in this case — really shouldn’t matter.

“I’m like, ‘man, he’s just a young, black man from the hood, trying to figure it out,” the radio personality told Vlad. “What does it matter if I like his sh** or not? […] Why does my opinion about what he’s wearing matter when he’s just a young brother from the hood trying to make it.” Thug, who remains incarcerated, has been applauded by many of his rap peers, who commend him for expressing himself the way he sees fit.

Just over two years ago, the “Lifestyle” hitmaker sat down for an interview with T.I. on his “ExpediTIously” podcast, where the latter said, “You were so confident in your skin that you put on a f***ing dress but maintained your status as a real n***a.” When asked whether his “Jeffery” mixtape cover, where he sports an extravagant blue dress, was a publicity stunt, Thug said no. “That motherf*cker matched. This on my kids,” he responded.

Thug has never been one to shy away from pushing boundaries, especially when it comes to fashion. In 2016, as previously mentioned, he drew controversy for wearing a dress on the cover of his JEFFERY mixtape. The dress, designed by Alessandro Trincone, was a statement piece that challenged traditional gender norms and sparked discussions about masculinity and self-expression.

While some praised Thug for his bold fashion choice, others criticized him for what they saw as a publicity stunt. T.I. was one of the most vocal critics, suggesting that Young Thug had worn the dress solely for attention. However, Thug himself has always maintained that he wore the dress because he liked it and wanted to make a statement.

In fact, Thugger addressed the controversy surrounding the dress in the opening track of his new album, “So Much Fun.” He revealed that he had chosen the dress himself after seeing it in New York and that he had long been known for pushing fashion boundaries. The album’s opening track references the dress, making it clear that it was a deliberate and meaningful choice for the rapper.

Thug is not alone in his mission to challenge traditional gender norms through fashion. Jaden Smith, another young black artist, has also made headlines for wearing clothing typically designed for women. Smith’s choice to wear women’s clothing is intended to promote acceptance of different forms of self-expression among future generations.

These artists are expanding the traditional definition of black masculinity and showing that there is nothing inherently wrong with men expressing themselves in any way they choose, regardless of sexual orientation.
