A Texas woman who beheaded her daughter in 2017 was sentenced to serve life in prison on Thursday.

According to Too Fab, Krystle Villanueva stabbed and decapitated five-year-old Giovanna Hernandez after she asked for a bowl of cereal on January 5, 2017. Villanueva’s father-in-law contacted 911 after she stabbed him in the head and back after making the horrifying discovery. A SWAT team entered the Hayes County home in an attempt to save Giovanna but it was too late as she was found dead in her bedroom. They also saw Villanueva standing in the front door naked after taking a shower.

Hayes County Sheriff Gary Cutler called the case “one of the worst” he’s ever seen and worked on.

“I’ve been in this line of work for over 43 years — 11 years as a homicide detective. This is one of the worst cases I’ve ever seen and been a part of.”

During her two-week trial, Villanueva’s lawyers argued that she was in a state of delusion when she committed the murder:

“Ms. Villanueva claimed that, at the time of the attacks, she had been under the delusional belief that her daughter and her father-in-law had been replaced by clones and had to be killed to bring back her real family members. While evidence indicated that Ms. Villanueva had been treated previously for mental problems, the prosecution pointed out that all such treatment coincided with prior drug abuse.”

An arrest report revealed Villaneuva had marijuana and alcohol in her system at the time of the murder.
