While a sequel to 2017’s ‘Girls Trip’ was first confirmed back in January 2022, its screenwriter has issued a “definitive update” that the movie is “officially happening,” with current plans to set the follow-up out in Ghana.
Tracy Oliver, who is one of the screenwriters working on the second installment, told Variety at the Sundance Film Festival last weekend that things are certainly in motion behind the scenes. “It’s definitely due,” she added after being quizzed on whether the final script had been turned in yet.

The comedy flick starring Jada Pinkett-Smith, Queen Latifah, Tiffany Haddish, and Regina Hall was a big hit at the box office, generating over $140 million, as four lifelong friends rekindle their sisterhoods during a fun-filled trip out to New Orleans.
Back in January 2022, the film’s producer, Will Packer, confirmed to ‘Good Morning America’ that all of its lead stars would reprise their iconic roles, saying, “We are absolutely in the stages, the ladies are in, I just talked to the director.”
Back in August 2022, Hall issued an update to fans who’d been pressing for answers about the film’s sequel since the second installment was first announced earlier in the year. But during her appearance on ‘Good Morning America,’ the actress had some rather disappointing news: filming had not yet commenced on the project because the crew was “not ready yet.”
At the time, Hall also revealed that she had yet to see a final copy of the script, though she was excited to see what adventure she and her friends would take on next. “I just can’t wait to see the script. It is going to happen, it’s what I’ve been told, I did hear that they’re writing,” she shared before mentioning how the health crisis post-Covid had drastically made the pace of things that much slower.
