While sitting down for Complex’s ‘GOAT Talk‘ series, where they spoke about their new blockbuster ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die,’ the dynamic duo that is Will Smith, 55, and Martin Lawrence, 59, share some of their wisdom, including advice on relationships.
During the sit-down, the duo pulled a card that asked them to offer “GOAT relationship advice. Simply and bluntly speaking, Lawrence said, “Treat the person how you want to be treated.” Smith asked, “How’s that come out for you in your life?”
Lawrence replied, “Well, I have two divorces,” to which Smith laughed. These two divorces include Martin Lawrence’s first marriage with ex-wife Patricia Southall (1995-1997) and his second marriage with ex-wife Shamicka Gibbs (2010-2012), both of which attended the premiere of their ex-husband’s ‘Bad Boys 4‘ film.
After laughing at Lawrence’s “two divorces” response, Smith joked and said, “So, you was like, ‘F**k that relationship advice?'” Lawrence replied, “I must have forgot, but I’m getting better.”

Will Smith, who has been separated from his second wife and two youngest children’s mother, actress Jada Pinkett Smith, since 2016, shared his own bit of advice with a deeper meaning. He said, “It’s impossible to make a person happy.” It’s reported that Smith shared a similar message to fans in his 2021 memoir, ‘Will.’ However, in his sit-down, he further advised, “Don’t even play the game and don’t try to have a person make you happy.”
Smith continued, “You have to discover your happiness and cultivate your happiness on your own and they have to cultivate theirs on their own. And you come together sharing the happiness you have versus trying to get happiness from them.”
Before marrying Jada Pinkett Smith in 1997, Will Smith was married to his first wife Sheree Zampino from 1992 to 1995. Smith and Zampino share a son, Trey Smith. Smith and Pinkett share their son Jaden Smith and daughter Willow Smith.
