The widow of the captain who operated the Ukrainian jetliner that crashed in Iran earlier this week said she warned her husband not to fly the plane due to safety concerns.

According to Sky News, Katerina Gaponenko explained how she and her husband, Volodymyr, assumed that the flight from Tehran would have been canceled due to tensions between the United States and Iran. She said when the flights resumed their schedules, she became very worried about her husband’s safety.

“I asked him: ‘Do not fly, do not do it.’ But he said: ‘We can’t backtrack, if it is not me, there is no one else. If it flies on schedule, I need to fly.’ I asked him to stay.”

Katerina said she wondered why Ukraine International Airline Flight 752 was delayed for an hour. She didn’t know the jet was only in the air for a few minutes after takeoff before it was engulfed in flames, killing all 176 passengers.

“This flight was planned in early December when there was nothing to be concerned about in Tehran. But just before they flew, some hostilities started. We knew about America, about Iraq, we knew that there was no safety but we could not believe that the flight was not cancelled. It is a number one question. I am not interested in who is to blame. I am interested in why they (the authorities) allow this flight to continue?
