WHO Confirms 70 COVID-19 Vaccines Are In Development, With 3 In Trial

The World Health Organization (WHO) is confirming that, globally, there are 70 coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines in development, with at least 3 already being tested in human trials.

Currently, Hong Kong’s Beijing Institute of Biotechnology and CanSino Biologics are the furthest-along at phase 2 in their trials. Two other companies, US-based Inovio and Moderna, are also in testing with human subjects.

Subsequent to the urgency of the pandemic, projections show that vaccines will be available next year at the earliest; which is about 10 to 15 years sooner than other vaccines we’ve seen hit the market.

Furthermore, US regulators have allowed Moderna to skip animal trials, moving straight to humans, while other larger companies, like Pfizer ans Sanofi, have reported candidated in earlier preclinical stages.

In addition to the US and China, Britain’s Oxford University vaccinology professor Sarah Gilbert says her team may have a vaccine ready by this fall.

Gilbert says, “I think there’s a high chance that it will work, based on other things that we have done with this type of vaccine. It’s not just a hunch, and as every week goes by, we have more data to look at.”

Confirming, British Health Secretary Matt Hancock says, “I know quite a lot about the Oxford project, and it is really great to see some hope, especially on the front page of the newspapers.”
